📺 Disney gets full control of Hulu!
After years of legal, financial, and strategic negotiations, it's clear: Disney $DIS is completing its takeover 100% stake in streaming platform Hulu, ending one of the last chapters of the older model of shared media ownership. The company will pay NBCUniversal (Comcast)$438.7 million to become the sole owner of the long-growing platform.
🎬 Hulu History:
Founded in 2007 as a joint project of media giants (NBC, FOX, ABC).
Disney stepped in in 2009 and gained operational control in 2019.
Today, after buying out the remaining 33% stake from Comcast, Hulu is fully under their direction.
🧠 Strategic Significance:
Combining into one streaming platform with Disney+ will enable: more efficient content management, better customer experience and a stronger competitive position against Netflix or Amazon.
📉 Financial impact of the transaction:
The entire transaction will have no impact on Disney's adjusted earnings estimate for fiscal year 2025. This marks a well-planned and accounted for acquisition that will not undermine the company's current financial stability.
Disney This move completes a 10-year journey towards full control of its own distribution infrastructure. At a time when the streaming market is no longer about growth at any cost, the ability to combine platforms and make the most of its own content is key.
Additionally, the ability to combine family, sports and general content within a single service may be exactly what consumers in the crowded streaming space start to look for. I myself am confused as to what streaming platform each show or movie is on.
What is your opinion of Disney and its streaming segment?
I had the stock in my portfolio, but I sold it because it was no longer interesting to me.
The company is doing solidly now and the stock has risen nicely over the last while. I have a few shares in my portfolio and will definitely hold more.
It's good news, but I would only buy $NFLX. Unfortunately, $NFLX stock is expensive right now and I'll have to wait for a better price.
