🚗 Uber eyes Delivery Hero, change also affects Foodora

Uber $UBER is nearing a deal to acquire German company Delivery Hero $DHER.DE for approximately €12.5 billion, or about $14.3 billion, according to the Financial Times. The offer is said to be around €41 per share. Delivery Hero has already confirmed it is in advanced talks with Uber, but final terms and the transaction timeline have not yet been agreed and could still change.

🍔 Delivery Hero also owns the Foodora brand, under which the former Dáme jídlo service has operated since 2023. Czech Foodora is part of Delivery Hero's European network and, according to its own data, handles deliveries from thousands of restaurants and shops across the country.

The acquisition would significantly expand Uber Eats' reach in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America. In addition to Foodora, Delivery Hero also operates brands such as Glovo, Talabat, Foodpanda and Yemeksepeti. The merger would therefore rank among the largest transactions in the history of online food delivery.

⚖️ However, the sheer scale of both groups could trigger a thorough review by antitrust authorities. The report says that a spin-off of Turkish service Yemeksepeti and several of Delivery Hero's European operations is being considered, which would be sold to an investment company. It is not yet known which specific countries the divestment would involve, so it is unclear whether Czech Foodora would go directly to Uber or be part of the separated activities.

For Czech customers, restaurants and couriers, there is no announced operational change at this moment. The report primarily concerns a potential change in the parent group's ownership, while the future of individual brands will depend on the final deal structure and regulators' stance.

Do you use online food delivery? What is your opinion on Uber's market position?
