🚨SK Hynix $SKHY is negotiating with Intel $INTC . For the first time, it could manufacture memory chips directly in the USA!!
According to Reuters, SK Hynix is negotiating with Intel about possible production of memory chips in the United States. If the companies reached an agreement, it would be the first-ever production of SK Hynix memories on American soil.
One option is that SK Hynix would use part of Intel's planned factory in Ohio. The second variant is the creation of a joint venture, which could also involve large cloud companies that want to secure stable supplies of memory chips.
🔥 Why is it important?
SK Hynix is one of the largest memory manufacturers in the world and is also one of the key suppliers of HBM memories for AI chips. The rapid growth of AI infrastructure and data centers significantly increases the demand for memories, and customers are pushing manufacturers to increase capacities.
For Intel, a potential agreement would mean further utilization of its huge project in Ohio, whose completion has been postponed to 2030–2031 due to the company's problems.
⚠️ The biggest obstacle may be South Korea
The production of advanced memories, such as HBM or DRAM, is considered a strategic technology in South Korea. Moving part of the production to the USA could therefore require the approval of the South Korean government.
Another problem is costs. Chip production in the USA is significantly more expensive than in Asia due to higher costs for labor, construction, and supply chain.
However, SK Hynix is also facing increasing pressure from the American government and its own customers to expand production in the USA.
👉 So far, it is only preliminary negotiations and no final agreement has been reached. But if it were to happen, it would be another important step in the shift of strategic semiconductor production from Asia to the United States.
