The British economy has been through a difficult period since 2015
First there was uncertainty about the terms of the Brexit deal and its consequences, then came the Covid-19 pandemic, followed by wars in Europe, double-digit inflation and the currency crisis. That is almost 10 years of uncertainty that has led to low investor, business and consumer confidence.
This year, the British economy is doing slightly better than expected, and some economists even believe Britain could avoid a recession. As a result, lost investor confidence could gradually return.
The decent performance of UK large caps, represented by the FTSE 100 index, can be attributed largely to sector composition. The energy, consumer goods and materials sectors were the best performers in 2022.
The UK's largest companies also operate globally. In 2022, when the GBP collapsed, these companies received a further boost to their revenues as overseas earnings were converted to cheaper GBP.
Is the UK facing a brighter tomorrow?
Britain's economy is beginning to stabilise after a series of economic shocks, but what do we make of a brighter tomorrow? 😄 Investment-wise, there's nothing really appealing to me.
