Disney fans cheer the success of the Marvel division

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is back in form. After many years when the profitable franchise giant seemed headed for inevitable decline, Disney's Marvel Studios has shown that it still has plenty of gas left in the tank.

The "Deadpool & Wolverine" movie surpassed analysts' initial expectations and brought in a staggering $211 million domestically. The film not only became the biggest opening of 2024, but also the biggest R-rated film opening in history and the sixth biggest opening of all time. Internationally, the film grossed $443 million, almost guaranteeing that it will easily cross the $1 billion mark.

The huge success of the film pushed Marvel past the $30 billion mark in the global market, making it the highest-grossing franchise of all time.

Furthermore, the success came at a time when Disney $DIS-0.1%,the studio that owns Marvel Studios, announced exciting news at Comic-Con. On an electrifying Saturday night, the studio announced that the Russo brothers would return as directors for two more Avengers movies, set to be released in 2026 and 2027. And in a shocking announcement, Robert Downey Jr. appeared on stage as Marvel's new big bad, Doctor Doom. It's clear that Marvel is on a roll because of this.

This much-needed boost came at the perfect time for the studio. Marvel, as an important part of Disney's profit engine, has struggled since "Avengers: Endgame." This epic conclusion, 22 films in the making, was the pinnacle of the previous era. Since then, the studio has produced a string of films that failed to appeal to audiences and critics, such as "The Marvels," "Eternals" and "Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania." On Disney+, outside of "Loki," most Marvel series have failed to catch on and find a place in cultural discourse.

The return of the Russo brothers and Robert Downey Jr. suggests that Bob Iger and his Magic Kingdom have listened to audiences. Their return means that the franchise is trying to return to beloved ingredients that have worked reliably in the past.

But returning to the past as a bet on future success is also a tacit admission that Marvel's creative engine has been stalling lately. It's certainly a smart temporary strategy to get the MCU back on track. But what happens when Marvel doesn't have the Russo's and Downey Jr. available?
