Five days ago, pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly $LLY announced the acquisition of biotech company AtaiBeckley, which develops psychedelic treatments for patients with depression and other mental illnesses. Eli Lilly will pay $2.8 billion for the company, with the total transaction value potentially rising to $3.8 billion upon achievement of development and regulatory milestones.
🧠 With this deal, one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies is entering the psychedelic medicine segment. Just a few years ago, this field was mostly speculative; today, billions of dollars from established players are flowing into it.
The most valuable asset of AtaiBeckley is the nasal spray BPL-003, which uses a synthetic form of 5-MeO-DMT to treat patients with treatment-resistant depression. The program has already received Breakthrough Therapy designation from the U.S. regulator, which could accelerate its further development and approval process.
📈 Eli Lilly is thus using the massive cash flow from successful obesity and diabetes drugs to build up other areas that could drive the company in the coming years. In addition to oncology and neurology, they are now clearly betting on the future of psychiatric treatment.
What do you think of this acquisition? Do you hold any pharmaceutical player in your portfolio?
Do you think psychedelic treatment has a bright future ahead, or is there still too much optimism around this segment?
