📷 Sony $SONY has been hovering around my watchlist for a while now, and this news is another reason why I want to take a closer look at the company.

Sony and TSMC $TSM are forming a joint venture focused on the development and production of next-generation image sensors. The total investment will reach approximately $4.7 billion, with Sony contributing $2.9 billion and TSMC adding another $1.8 billion. Sony will also be the controlling shareholder in the new venture.

Production is set to begin in 2029 in Kumamoto, Japan, and the sensors will be primarily intended for smartphones. However, there is also interesting future potential in robotics and autonomous vehicles, where demand for high-quality image sensors is expected to continue growing with the development of AI.

The semiconductor division of Sony is one of the reasons why I find the company interesting from an investment perspective. Most people still associate Sony primarily with PlayStation, televisions, or movies, but the company is also a global leader in image sensors.

Does anyone have Sony in their portfolio? I’ve been thinking about opening a position for a while now.

My favorite blogger recently wrote about it, so it might come in handy: https://tspasemiconductor.substack.com/p/tsmc-sony-vs-chinas-rising-cis-ecosystem

I don't have a position, but it doesn't look bad. Maybe I'll take a closer look. Thanks for the overview.
