Hewlett Packard Enterprise $HPE today received an order worth $1.2 billion from Vultr for servers built on AMD chips for artificial intelligence. The stock reacted with a rise of around 4%.
HPE split off from the original Hewlett-Packard back in 2015. HPQ kept mostly computers and printers, while HPE makes servers, storage, networking, and other data center equipment.
I have Dell $DELL in my portfolio, but lately I've been looking at other players in this space too. Huge amounts of money are flowing around data centers and networking right now, and HPE is starting to interest me quite a bit. Besides, I don't think you have to pick just one. They can easily coexist in a portfolio because each has a slightly different business mix.
The company also raised its long-term growth outlook for its networking division. And that, in my opinion, is the part of the market that gets talked about less than the chips themselves. Data centers don't just need Nvidia or AMD; they also need servers, networking equipment, storage, and everything around it.
Does anyone here have HPE in their portfolio? And if you had to choose between HPE and Dell, which would you go for? Does it make sense to hold multiple companies from the same sector in a portfolio, or do you prefer to pick one player?
