Meta has announced that it has created a new video creation tool called Movie Gen. This AI model has the potential to compete with the biggest players in the media generation field such as OpenAI or ElevenLabs. Movie Gen can create realistic videos and audio clips based on user instructions, bringing revolutionary possibilities for content creators.

What can Movie Gen do?

Movie Gen can generate videos up to 16 seconds in length based on text-based instructions. For example, it can create footage of animals surfing waves or people painting pictures on demand. In addition, it can add sound effects and music that is synchronized with the video content. The tool can even handle editing existing videos - in one demo, Meta added pompoms to a man running in the desert, or changed a parking lot to wet and full of puddles when a skateboarder rode across it.

Who is Movie Gen for?

Currently, Movie Gen is only available to Meta's internal staff and select external partners, including some filmmakers. However, there are plans to integrate the tool into apps like Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger in the next year. Movie Gen is meant to be fun, simple for filmmakers and is meant to increase interaction across platforms. While it's not yet clear what exactly the integration will look like, the goal is to encourage users to create and edit videos.

Challenges and the future

One of the major hurdles Meta is tackling ahead of the launch of Movie Gen is the time it takes to create a video. Currently, it takes "tens of minutes" to generate a single video, which Meta says is too long for ordinary users. In addition, the company is addressing issues of security and misuse of the technology, especially when creating personalized videos. For example, Movie Gen could be used to create inappropriate videos of other people without their consent, which Meta plans to eliminate through watermarks and other measures.

Mark Zuckerberg stresses that AI will play a key role in not only user growth, but also revenue. In addition to Movie Gen, Meta plans for AI to power its apps and other technologies such as smart glasses in the future.
