Agriculture is a key sector that provides food for billions of people around the world. Moreover, it is also a sector that can be affected by a number of global events such as natural disasters, political crises or economic uncertainty. These factors affect not only production but also the prices of agricultural commodities.

In this article, we look at three interesting companies operating in the agricultural sector. These companies illustrate a wide range of activities, from crop processing to the production of bioethanol or crop protection chemicals.

Archer-Daniels-Midland $ADM

Archer-Daniels-Midland is one of the global giants in the agricultural industry. The company focuses on the processing and trading of agricultural products, including animal feed, bioethanol and food raw materials. The company is also known for its approach to innovation, such as developing products like high-fructose corn syrup and Omega-3 fatty acids.

In 2022, ADM achieved revenues of $94 billion and boasts a long history of paying dividends - 92 years in a row, in fact. Yet it faces challenges such as rising production costs or fluctuating commodity prices. But thanks to its vertical integration and the scale of its operations, the company has a stable market position and long-term growth potential.

Bayer $BAYN.DE

The German company Bayer is known as a manufacturer of pharmaceuticals, consumer goods and agricultural products. It has a key position in the agriculture sector thanks to its acquisition of Monsanto in 2018, giving it access to a range of products, including the popular herbicide Roundup. Bayer is one of the world's largest producers of seeds and crop protection products.

However, the company faced a difficult period in 2024 when it had to cut its dividend significantly to pay down its debt. The agricultural part of the business faced a decline in sales volume, reflecting the difficult market situation. However, Bayer continues to be a major player with a diverse product portfolio, giving it an advantage even when individual markets fluctuate.

Bunge $BG

Bunge is another important company in the agricultural sector, operating in areas such as grain milling, oil, sugar and ethanol production. The company announced the acquisition of Canadian firm Viterra in 2023, allowing it to expand its operations in grains and oilseeds.

Like its competitors, Bunge has faced challenges related to falling commodity prices, which has taken a toll on its financial results. In 2023, revenues fell by 11%, mainly due to the decline in ethanol and refined oil prices. Nevertheless, Bunge remains a major player due to its diversified operations and ability to adapt to market changes.
